The Historic Hamilton Howell House was built in Sweet Auburn, Atlanta in 1893 by Alexander Hamilton Jr. as his family's home. He was the leading Black architect and builder in Atlanta in the late 1800's - early 1900's. Hamilton built the Butler Street YMCA, and many other structures and homes in Sweet Auburn and in-town Atlanta. Sweet Auburn, the neighborhood that included the "Richest Negro Street in the World," according to Fortune Magazine in 1956.
Hamilton's home became available in early 1984, after his youngest daughter, who had lived in the house all her life, passed away. George Howell and Mtamanika Youngblood bought the home shortly thereafter, and raised a family of their own. The couple's efforts in renovating the Hamilton home led to their involvement in the Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC) and ultimately the revitalization of the residential portion of Sweet Auburn and the broader Old Fourth Ward. Because of its location, the home served as the venue for the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Open House for nearly twenty years, hosting residents, national and international visitors. It was also the location for the official After Party for the Atlanta Life Insurance Company's Annual International Art Exhibition. The home has been the site for numerous gatherings including weddings, meetings, receptions, book signings, dinners and parties. The Hamilton Howell House Bed & Breakfast was created in 2019 to preserve the home and continue its use as the community amenity it has become.
